Parish Church of:
Boconnoc
The church (dedication unknown) is an ancient building of stone, in the
Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle of nearly equal
length, separated from the nave by an arcade of six arches, supported on granite
piers, north aisle of shorter dimensions, south porch, and a turret at the
south-west angle, containing one bell; the east window is stained, and there are
memorial windows to Louisa Susan Ann, wife of W.W. Moore (1864) and Hugh
Granville (1875), children of the Hon. G.M. Fortescue and Lady L. Fortescue; to
the Hon. George Matthew Fortescue, second son of Hugh, first Earl (1877); Lieut-Col,
Cyril Dudley Fortescue D.L. formerly of the Coldstream guards, d. 1891, and to
William Pease esq (1881), who was steward to the estate; there is a monument to
Penelope (Mohun), wife of William Drew, esq. ob. 1637, besides others of some
interest in the north aisle; the reredos, erected in 1888, was made from old
carved wood from Boconnoc House, by Mr Harry Hems of Exeter; the lectern and
prayer desk are of Spanish chestnut, and were presented by Lady Louisa Fortescue;
the communion table is richly carved and has on the north end the inscription
"Made by Me, Raynold Mohun, 1631;" the carved work on the organ was designed and
executed by Misses Fortescue , and there is an ancient font; the church was
restored in 1873 and will seat 300 persons. The register of baptisms and burials
dates from the year 1709; marriages 1712.
