Botus Fleming

The church of St. Mary, dedicated in 1259, is an ancient structure of Pentewan stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and a western tower of three stages containing 6 bells, dated respectively 1784, 1766, 1727, 1842 and 1727 (2): in the north aisle under a low obtuse arch, is the recumbent figure of a knight in armour, said to represent Stephen le Fleming, the founder of the church, temp. Rich I; the other monuments are of modern date: the church was new roofed and otherwise restored in 1873, at a cost of £800, and is fitted with open benches seating 180 persons: in the centre of a field north of the church is the pyramidal tomb of William Martyn esq. M.D. of Plymouth, who died 22nd November , 1762, and was buried here by his own direction. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1549; burials , 1548.
