Parish Church of:
Crantock
The collegiate church of St. Carantocus was founded by
William Bruere, Bishop of Exeter (1223-45), in the time of
Henry III, for a dean and ten prebendaries and is a building
of local sandstone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, with
some portions of Early English date, consisting of chancel,
nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower
containing 6 bells.:the chancel retains a Decorated piscina
and a niche with stone shelf: there are some remains of the
screen, and the rood stairs are used as an approach to the
pulpit through one of the piers: the silver chalice of the
communion service is dated 1576: the font, of native elvan,
is dated 1474: in the church is preserved a piece of
sculpture in alabaster, the intention of which is not known;
fragments of stone coffins may still be found scattered
about: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptism dates
from 1615; marriages and burials 1559.
