Parish Church of:
Davidstow
The church of St. David, rebuilt on the site of the
former church, is an edifice of stone in the Early English
style consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles,
south porch and a western tower of three stages with
pinnacles containing 6 bells, the first two dated 1707, the
third 1783 and the next two 1726; the whole cost of
reconstruction accounting to £2,500 was defrayed by Miss
Pearse, of Launceston, in memory of her family, who had been
landowners and inhabitants in the parish for many
generations: the lay rector, Michael Williams esq. at the
same time enriched the east end with three stained windows
in memory of his father Sir William Williams; his sister,
Mrs Hornby Buller, and the Hon. Ashley Carr-Glyn; and also
presented an organ and church plate: another stained glass
window was given by Mrs Pearce: the bells re-hung in 1881
and a treble added, raising the peal to six: the font is
octagonal and of curious design: there are various memorials
to the families of Bettenson, 1638-93; Pearse, 1638-1835:
John Wills, gent. ob. 1647; Francis Nicholls esq. ob. 1674;
Alse Muchell, ob. 1694: and Richard Martyn, ob. 1698; the
church afford 250 sittings. The register dates from the year
1709.
