Jacobstow
The church of St. James is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of granite with pinnacles and containing 6 bells, all recast in 1771; the rood stairs remain in the north wall; the panelled pulpit is formed of carved bench ends; the stone font, a very fine example of Transition Norman work, has a square basin with carved heads at the corners, and the sides are ornamented with passion flowers encircled by serpents: in 1891 a stained window was inserted in the tower: there are 250 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates form the year 1653; marriages, 1656.
