North Tamerton

The church of St Denis, supposed to have been built, early in the 15th century, is an ancient building of granite and stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, south porch and a fine embattled western tower 90 feet high, inclusive of the pinnacles and containing 6 bells; many of the bench ends are of ancient carved oak; the north window in the chancel is stained: the south aisle retains a piscina, and there is a font of the same date as the church; on the wall at the east end of the north aisle is a brass inscribed as follows: "Here lyeth Leonard Loves of Ogbeare, Esquyer, who dyed the forthyth Daye of Apryll, Anno D.M. 1576, General Receaver to ye Quene's Maiestle of all hir Revewes in the Counties of Devon and Cornwall:" there are 262 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556.
