Parish Church of:

Saltash

SS. Nicholas and Faith is an ecclesiastical parish formed May 10, 1881. The chapel, which belongs to the corporation, is an ancient building of stone, mainly of the Norman period, dating from about 1120, but with portions of Decorated and Perpendicular work, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, north chapel, south transept, south porch and a tower on the north side, containing 6 bells; in the north wall of the transept are three stout piers and two closed arches, which seem to mark the former junction of the church with the monastic building to which it belonged; the bosses of the roof display the arms of Richard (Plantagenet), Earl of Polton and Cornwall, and those of Edmund, his son and successor; in the wall of the building is an inscribed tablet recording its renovation in 1689; the monuments are all of modern date: the church was well restored in 1869, at a cost of £1,300: a stained east window has since been inserted: there are about 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1694; there is also a register of marriages supposed to have taken place at St. Stephen's, from 1740.
